Naturalization and Citizenship

New York City Lawyers Skilled in Naturalization and Citizenship Matters

Immigration attorneys boast more than 35 years of experience

One of the most rewarding experiences for an immigrant is to obtain United States citizenship. This status conveys numerous benefits, including the right to vote, to serve on juries, to hold government jobs and to hold public office (except that of U.S. president). It also allows issuance of a U.S. passport and removes the possibility of deportation on any grounds, even for criminal convictions. Further, adult citizens have the right to petition for their parents and siblings to immigrate to the U.S.

Naturalization is the legal process by which a foreign-born person becomes a U.S. citizen, as opposed to a person who is a citizen at birth. The path to citizenship is not without its hurdles, and an experienced and skilled law firm can help a naturalization applicant overcome the potential obstacles that may arise. At the Law Offices of Allen E. Kaye and Associates, P.C. in New York City, we have decades of experience helping immigrants achieve their goals of becoming U.S. citizens.

Experienced attorneys explain requirements for naturalization

Our seasoned immigration lawyers can review your circumstances and inform you if you may qualify for naturalization as a U.S. citizen. Eligibility is based on a combination of factors. First, applicants must be at least 18 years old and in one of the following legal statuses:

  • a lawful permanent resident of the U.S. for five years
  • the spouse of a U.S. citizen and a lawful permanent resident of the U.S. for three years
  • a lawful permanent resident of the U.S. for three years who has served in the U.S. military
  • a grantee of political asylum in the U.S. for four years

In addition, applicants must show they have been physically present in the U.S. for at least half of the relevant time periods.

Besides proving their legal status and physical presence, naturalization applicants must establish that they:

  • are of good moral character
  • can read, write, and speak English
  • have a basic understanding of U.S. history and government
  • are attached to the principles and ideals of the U.S. Constitution

These qualitative factors are shown by passing oral and written tests given by government examiners as well as background checks conducted through federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.

Seasoned counsel assist with all steps on the path to citizenship

Our compassionate lawyers can guide you through every phase of the naturalization process, which include the following:

  • preparation and filing of Form N-400 and payment of filing fees
  • biometric fingerprinting
  • interview with a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services examiner
  • completion of an English language test
  • completion of a history and civics exam
  • taking the oath of citizenship before a judge

Working with our experienced naturalization and citizenship lawyers can help you relieve stress and uncertainty and focus on meeting the eligibility requirements.
